MASSPORT witnesses demonstration of new scanner at Passport Systems, Inc.

N. Billerica, Mass., July 11, 2011 -- Passport Systems, Inc., a developer of a new, automated, non-intrusive cargo screening system that can accurately identify the contents of a container by determining the location and composition of materials, including commercial items, contraband, fissile materials, explosives, etc., today announced that a delegation from MASSPORT officials responsible for security, visited Passport Systems to see the progress made by the company in the development of its novel cargo inspection systems.

“There is a critical need to resolving the problem of cargo inspection without impeding the flow of commerce. The installation of new inspection systems at airports, seaports, transportation centers and national borders would not only help protect our nation and citizens from threat materials potentially transported in the supply chain, but would also improve our nation’s ability to better enforce compliance with our laws and regulations, and increase tariff collection,” said Gustavo Bottan, Passport Systems’ Vice President Business Development.

Most containers entering the U.S. at ports are screened with passive radiation detectors which are insufficient to detect shielded nuclear materials. Further, fewer than five percent are inspected via X-ray imaging or manually unloading of cargo, which takes resources and time to perform. These issues can be addressed by using Passport’s technologies.

The company’s products will include a primary scanner for fast and highly accurate clearing of containers to ensure they do not carry a shielded nuclear material or nuclear device; and a secondary scanner for unambiguous resolution of cargo anomalies or discrepancies via direct material identification without ever opening a container. Their combination would not only provide security but would increase facilitation at ports and land border crossings compared to currently used technology and methods. Further, the use of the company’s secondary scanning system also allows forensic analysis of the cargo i.e. the potential to determine the cargo’s quality or grade, its origin and whether the products are original or counterfeit.

“We are very pleased to have MASSPORT visit our facility to witness the performance of our scanner technology” said Dr. Robert J. Ledoux, Ph.D., president and CEO of Passport Systems. “Passport Systems has developed a unique technology that can solve a pressing national security issue as well as bring economic value to the supply chain by improving facilitation and performing cargo validation and cargo analysis not possible by other means.”
