N. Billerica, Mass., April 1, 2010 -- Passport Systems, Inc. has received a $1.3 million award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, for Phase II of the Intelligent Radiation Sensor Systems (IRSS) Program.  The purpose of the award is to continue the development of a prototype wireless network combining commercially available radiation detection devices with the company’s advanced networking, detection, localization and identification algorithms.

Phase II is a nine-month program culminating in the completion of a final design and the evaluation and selection by DHS of a supplier to build an IRSS advanced technology demonstration prototype.  This is the second of a four-phase development program worth a potential $3.97 million to Passport, if all four options are exercised.  The company received $1 million in Phase I.

“Dr. Robert Ledoux, president of Passport, stated that the company is excited to continue working with the Department of Homeland Security on the IRSS Program.  The IRSS program further leverages Passport’s expertise in active inspection technologies, data fusion, signal processing, algorithm development and sensor networking.  It is hopeful that this work will assist government and private authorities in detecting and preventing radiological threats to the United States and other countries.”
