N. Billerica, Mass., April 1, 2011 -- Passport Systems, Inc. has  received a $1.4 million award from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), for Phase III (Integration & Test) of the Intelligent Radiation Sensor Systems (IRSS) Program.  The purpose of the award is to build and characterize a prototype wireless network combining commercially available radiation detection devices with the company’s advanced networking, detection, localization and identification algorithms.  The system design, developed by Passport over the last  18 months, was approved by DNDO at the end of Phase II.

Phase III is a nine-month effort culminating in the delivery of two validated test systems to DHS for use in the IRSS advanced technology demonstration.  This is the third of a four-phase development program worth a potential $4.17 million to Passport, if all four options are exercised.  The company received a total of $2.6 million thus far in Phases I and II.

Dr. Robert Ledoux, president of Passport, stated that “the company is excited to continue working with the Department of Homeland Security on the IRSS Program.  The IRSS program further leverages Passport’s expertise in active inspection technologies, data fusion, signal processing, algorithm development and sensor networking.  It is hopeful that this work will assist government and private authorities in detecting and preventing radiological threats to the United States and other countries.”
